The "Go-Hard-Or-Suffer-The-Rest-Of-Your-Life" Mentality

February 17, 2018 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Low 30s

Comments:
Today, I ran 6 miles down the campus loop. My legs felt a little sore from yesterday, but for the most part this run pretty decent. I was listening to music, so that kept me cruising along and I even saw special guest star Ryan Whinnery along the way. That was the motivation that I needed.

Anyways, I was thinking a lot on this run about Paul Chelimo's "Go-Hard-Or-Suffer-The-Rest-Of-Your-Life" Mentality and how I've been really living by that motto throughout all my races this year. I mean I literally wear that shirt before warming up for every race. During the SVSU mile, I made a bold move to the front with 450 meters to go. Did I win? Hell no, I got dicked on, but I dropped my PR by 5 seconds. In my 3K, did I go at 9 minute pace? Yup. Did I succeed? Nope, but damn did I go for it. In my 800m yesterday, I made a huge surge to the front before we even hit the halfway point. Once again, did i win? Nope dicked on again, but it gave me the boost I needed to break 2.

My point is you gotta just go for it every time you race. It's not about looking at splits to try to get times, it's about racing and making bold moves to try to put yourself in a position to win. Is it going to work every time? No! But it's gonna give you a great shot to hit those time goals and maybe even sneak away with a win. At the US Olympic 5K trials, my boy Paul Chelimo made a completely suicidal surge to the front with 300 meters to go. Did he win? No. Did he almost die down the home stretch? Yes, but he still managed to barely qualify and go on to win a silver medal at the olympics. So boys just remember while you're racing GO HARD OR SUFFER THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
