Outdoor SZN is here boiz! I started the outdoor SZN today with one of the year's wackest meets (well it always is anyways). I had some goals coming into this race and did I accomplish them? Well you can find out in the race recaps below.
800: My goal going into the race was to try and run 1:58. I felt decent going into the race, but my warmup was pretty wack. I was taking times for the 200s (which probably got fucked, considering Rando Jay definitely beat Jack Luxem, but his time is slower), so I wasn't as warmed as i would be for a normal race
The race started off horribly. I had one of the most abysmal, jump-off-hubbard, kms, smh level starts that i've ever had in my life. It's like I heard the word "go" and just didn't react. So i immediately got stuck in the inside in between BJ and Carson and i could not move. I eventually realized 150 meters in that i was running closer to mile pace and took off. I managed to catch back up and pass Austin, but Paolo was already a long ways away. I hit the 400m in 60 seconds, but was determined to still run fast. On the last lap, I was starting to catch Paolo... but as the Saginaw Valley announcer once said when Phil barely beat me "I was too little, too late". I made up a lot of ground, but he managed to beat by a second and my watch said I finished in 2:01.03. Definitely not a bad time by any means though. I wasn't too disappointed considering I only ran 2 seconds off my PB and pretty much even split the 800 for the first time. I had never done that before, so I was actually pretty happy with how it went despite have a horrible start and getting 2nd. Not a perfect race, but as Justyn Knight said "you gotta turn those Ls into lessons".
400: This was my first time doing an open 400. Once again my warm up was straight trash and i was timing the men's 1500. I didn't really care though, who actually times the open 400 lol.
I went out for the 400 in lane 800. I battled with Austin for the first 200m (he also almost didn't race it smh), but i pulled ahead a bit. I thought that I might have the W, but with a little more than 100ms to go, I felt that my throne was being challenged. It was Paolo. Paolo and I had a really good battle to the finish, but ultimately he beat me by less than a second. Definitely not a bad effort on my part, Paolo is just tough to beat. My watch had 54.87, which would be a 0.01 PR if that counts for anything. The intrasquad results say I ran 55, but I definitely broke it FUCK THE TIMERS.
Overall, it was a good day in the office. I was definitely satisfied with both of times and I think I'm still in pretty good shape. Definitely ready for a fast 1500m at Spartan Invite on April 7th.
