Mindless adventure!

April 7, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I set out this morning with to real plan, a vague destination, and no fixed time limits. In fact, I didn't start my watch or even look to see what time I left. I was liberating. I starting by heading up the Charles River, thinking I'd run out along there for 60-90 minutes and back through West Cambridge but instead I found myself tempted to cross the River and then veer into Newton, exploring the winding, often dead-ending, street of the Nonantum hilltops, at times cutting through churchyards or inactive construction sites. For the most part, I had little idea where I was, and only a vague, often wrong, sense of which direction I was running it was great. When I finally got to around 70 minutes, I climbed a mighty hill, caught sights of the Boston skyline, and then consulted my phone for how far away I was and how best to get home. Added on a bit more rambling after that, including a cut through a little stand of woods and a loop around a small pond, but eventually set off for home through Brighton along Cambridge Street. Listened to about 70 pages of Libby Wood's "Insurgent Collective Action and The Civil War in El Salvador."

When I got back over the River Street bridge into Cambridge, I got caught at a red light and, seeing a pack of runner go by, decided to chase after them down the river path. I succeeded in catching up with them and passing them but there was one more guy up ahead who I wanted to pass so I continued down the river at a brisk tempo, starting to breathe hard, keeping the pace strong all the way to Mass and up the street back to my apartment for a total of 1 1/2 miles.

On the whole, a bit tired and a little sore, but very pleased!
