The long "Long Run"

November 1, 2009 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 45 F and raining

Comments:
Route: home to airport, Leesville to Timberlake, Enterprise to 221 Thomas Jefferson to airport plus 3 mile neighborhood loop. Raining pretty hard all night and I was hoping it would let up...it didn't. Soggy shoes and socks from about 15 minutes in and shirt and shorts got there soon enough. Oh, and it was windy. Tried to keep it at a fairly slow even pace throughout. Knee started hurting (especially on the hills and this was a hilly course) at about 8 miles which got me nervous, but it didn't get any worse through mile 19, from there I adjusted my running to ease the pain...a great way to get another injury, but thankfully managed not to. I got back to my neighborhood at about 19.5 miles and wanted to go a bit farther. Managed to do all of my 3 mile neighborhood loop at a slow but consistent pace. Knee was pretty bad by the end. I was hoping to get into the 20+ mile range to give me confidence for the marathon. I tell you, from 20 on it gets hard. This was close to a 4:00 marathon pace, even with the weather, but I lost speed big time in the last 30 minutes. I may end up crawling over the finish. Dropped a water bottle on the way out but found it on the way in. Took Gel at 1:00, 1:50, and 2:40. Long run officially in the books.
