Corunna Firecrack 5K

July 4, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: High 70s and Humid

Comments:
Happy 4th of July loggers. I spontaneously decided to race a local 5K in Corunna, just to see what kind of shape I'm in. I was gonna do New Buffalo's Big Smiles 5K for the 6th year in a row, but looks like that wasn't happening this year. Shame, never got to win. I came into this run going for the W, since in the past 3 years the winning time has been between 17:20 and 18:00. So I figured that I'd have a shot. Here's a recap.

Warm up:

I drove up to Corunna from EL with Liz in the wee hours of the morning. I knew my legs weren't feeling great and this was the first run I wouldn't have run gum for since EMU. Man, I've got way too hooked on that stuff. But i showed up to the race and then remembered shitty 5Ks don't take cards. So i had to rush to an ATM and get some cash real quick. Luckily, I got registered and paid for with 30 minutes to spare. I warmed up for 2 miles around Corunna, took a poo, and got to the starting line. After the national anthem, the 5K director announced that their timing system was broken, so it was all be hand timed L. $30 for a hand timed race? Whatev, but I looked around the starting line and immediately knew I had some competition. I immediately assumed they were all Corunna high school kids and then thought to myself "don't get fucked on by these kids".

Race:

The race went off and it was led by 2 little kids, 2 kids I knew were gonna drop behind before mile 1, and then 3 other kids who looked pretty good. I tucked behind the better guys to see if I could just sit on them until the end. Well, we went through the first mile in 5:06 and they showed no signs of fatigue, so I immediately knew I was fucked.

As expected, it was just us 4 after the mile: me, 2 gangly af kids, and orange shirt kid who liked like he was in middle school. It high 70s and 70% humidity, so I started to really the heat early in the race. The 3 kids broke away from me somewhere after the mile and I knew I was gonna get dusted by some high schoolers. I crossed the 2 mile and for the first time ever during a 5K, I grabbed a cup of water from the water table. Man, either I'm weak af or it's a marathon habit. After the 2 mile, Corunna's coach and/or assistant coach caught up to from behind and passed me. Fuck, this dude was definitely like 40 and putting his dick on the table. Luckily in the last half mile of the race, I caught back up to him and passed him. After we exited the woods, I almost took a wrong turn away from the finish line, but luckily he yelled at me from behind that i was going the wrong way. Immediately after that, I saw the finish line. Not sure if he let me beat him or not, but I placed 4th overall in a standard 16:52. Pretty much my default 5k time. Also had to poo that entire last mile, but thankfully didn't poo my pants like last year.

After:

After the race, I met up with Liz (Shoutout for the 8am support) and I jumped under a cool shower that they had. Now at this point, I figured that I at least won my age group. But actually I was wrong. As it turned out, 2/3 kids who beat were college kids just trying to win a local 5K as well. Bastards! I ended up cooling down a slow mile with orange shirt kid and it turned out he's going into his junior year at Manchester. Man, I guess I was wrong about his lol. And I athletic.netted all the guys at the end and I've run faster times than all of them.

The kid who got third saw me and asked "hey kid, how old are you?". Bastard. As it turns out, he was LCC's very own Jack Youngblood. I recognize that name and know I have dusted him before, but whatever fam. At least I only got beat by one local high schooler (who actually won the entire race).

Overall not the best time or place, but I'm not mad about it. i haven't been hitting high miles or doing workout yet, so workouts for me are starting next week. Definitely needed to get dusted in order to motivate myself. I gotta get in shape if I was my 2014 Mattawan 5K title back. There's no way i'm losing this year, especially to a semi-pro chick.
