Decided on a river day with Sadie and Stella and figured - “Why not Cardiac in 100deg heat with a 1.75yr old and a 4.67 yr old!”
The hike down was interesting - hella hot - mucho water breaks & holding them quite a bit. But their attitudes were solid and the reward of the river kept us moving down and down. I kept thinking to myself that the hike back up was gonna be brutal - carry our kids up Cardiac?! “Fun”!
We made it down to the river and thankfully excitement took over. They had a blast - cooled off, snacked, and just lounged around. Then it was time to head up .... Uh oh ....
.... Immediately Sadie started running up the Jeep road - probably looking akin to “Chikara Kart” from RDL - “mini mushroom boosts” but little ground gained. I told her to pace herself and focus on deep breathing #pacer4lifeMF
Once we hit Cardiac proper she kept the momentum going - powerhiking/running the steps and gobbling up the false flats and douche grade. I kept waiting for her to “bonk” .... but she didn’t. Geez!
So I encouraged her to start singing! Why not make it fun and she did! Belting out hits from Frozen and a little R. City “Locked Away” ... Yep, she’s a Rydman! I mentioned to Sara - “This girl may get me back into ultra-running.
As we chipped our way up - Sara and I switching off holding Stella - who would hike 20yds at a time on gentler grades - while Sadie pranced her way uphill.
No way she does the whole thing, I thought. A 4yr old?
Then, 3/4 of the way up, “the mind” started to play tricks on her. “I’m getting hot Dad!” ... We’d stop, breathe, water ... Then she’d start running again. “Whoa, you’ll get even hotter that way! Just walk!” ... “But running is less tiring!” Lol ... Then the water breaks started getting more frequent - 50yds at a time.
90% of the way up - she stopped - “Dad can you hold me now?!” I was so proud. “Are you sure? You’re almost to the top?” So I carried her for 100yds ... then she wanted to hike some more ... then held her... hiked, held, hiked. “Ok Sadie last uphill, I want you to finish this - so yell out ‘I can do this!’
“I can do this!” In her overly hot and tired - whimpering voice. And she did it. We were proud of her toughness. It was a fun and challenging family hike. Rydman girls are tough!
