16th Annual Alumni Challenge

August 18, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 80 and very humid

Comments:
First year without my family to help out, but it went smoothly. I only jogged over to the main parking lot and back about an hour before, and did a 20 yard strider at the start, but that seems to have been enough. (Probably my negative split was related to the lack of warm-up?) There were many lower schoolers this year and that made for some hard dodging in the first few hundred meters, plus there were numerous potholes. Once on the crescent I worked my way by one father (Jake Moss) and then was alone until after the turn when Ethan Burns caught me. (I was sitting about ten seconds back from Oliver Satola who'd passed me 600m in and Gaba who was a little ahead of him and then Mark, Rudnick, and Griffin were up front.) After a minute of company I encouraged Ethan to move ahead as he seemed ready to do so. He only got 5 meters out and then steadied. At some point I realized I was just going through the motions so I went back up to Ethan and passed him. That kept me focused for the final km and I managed some sort of kick in the final minutes. Mile splits (taken at the top of the stairs) 6:08 and 5:59 and the total time was 12:07.9. Last year I'd run 12:09, so I'll be satisfied. For a race of moderate effort and motivation, I'd say I'm at peace. I'd like to get some decent training in over the next few months and try my hand a late fall race. I'm already signed up for Rock The Creek and Somerset will be tempting. Maybe I can find one more 10km or something to do after those? A few long runs and some race-pace work would be useful. We'll see...
