Ah yes, perhaps the final Spartan Invitational of my club XC career. Who knows maybe I'll pull a Collin Riley and run it until I'm 40, but as of right now this is it. I'm not too upset, because I never really liked this race. It always hot no matter what. This morning was definitely a major tease as it was misty and really cool. The weather even said it'd be 73 and partly cloudy. But good ol Spartan Invite just had to be a little rascal and be hot and humid af. Let's take you through my journey
Warm up: I got out of class and made it to Spartan Invite around 10:15ish. I got everyone's chips and started the warmup with a large group of guys. The sun already started beating down, so I knew this would be a classic Spartan Invite Race. Wouldn't be the same without a horrible amount of heat and humidity. Then I was gonna do warmup drills, but forgot to look up what box we were in, so RIP in peace to warm up drills. Austin led a pretty solid hype chant circle. I think he did a good job, just needs to be a little longer next time. BJ will always be the GOAT, but I think Austin's a solid replacement.
Race: This race went pretty much the same as it goes every year. Really not much different at all tbh. I went out pretty far behind all of the big players and tried to keep things as relaxed as possible. Whenever I saw anyone cheering for me, I just dicked around and made Ben Lambert memorial faces. I came through the first mile at 5:35ish with Whinnery. Then I passed Whinnery and slowly started to pick off some of the guys in front of me. I hit 2 miles at 11:33 and figured I was move pretty slow, so I started to make more efforts to pass people. The heat was pretty brutal, so I was surging and breaking quite a bit, but ya know not horrible. I hit the 3 mile somewhere in the 17:30's and then passed Headphones sometime around there. After I passed Headphones, there was not another running club guy in sight. RIP in peace. Definitely made me slow down a little bit as I was hoping to catch up to more guy. The last mile was tough and the heat really got to me, but I kicked a little bit at the finish line. I finished in a classic 29:07, which is pretty consistent with what I always run here.
Overall: Well overall, I didn't run over 30 minutes so I'm happy about that. I predicted my time to Liz to be about 28:56, so I wasn't too far off at all. Mediocre stuff, but it could've honestly been so much worse. Overall satisfied, I'm curious to see if do significantly better at Little Tens or remain the same. Only time will tell.
Shoutouts to Red Cap and Billy B for crushing it today. They led the club today and both ran sub 28s on a really hot day. Definitely super impressive stuff.
