Purple Valley Classic

woke up early today, did a 10 min shakeout and had some breakfast. after that, I started to feel really horrible. my back and stomach hurt a lot and I spent most of the morning curled up on my bed in pain. But, I decided to just go to the meet and see what happened. I felt bad on the warmup but kind of just kept going through the motions and went to the start line since I didn't feel that bad and I'd definitely felt worse on warmups before. I was pretty nervous but I decided to just treat it as a learning experience and do my best to make the most of the situation, rather than freak out. once I got on the line I decided to fake it till I made it and started dancing and jumping on the line. went out a little harder than I often do the first 800 and tried to stick to my teammates but my legs started to hurt almost instantly and I slowed down. I had a bad stomach cramp and I was worried I wouldn't make it through the race. but I tried to relax and and slowly the pain in my legs and stomach subsided and I realized I could start moving faster. I moved up throughout the woods section and after a slow hill, I caught up to Tori as we were exiting the woods with about a mile to go. I motioned her to go with me and the two of us sped up together. Being next to her helped me push up the last little hill and build speed throughout the field loop. I kept almost dropping back but I managed to just stare at the back of her singlet (yellow and purple cow print, naturally) and keep moving and I found I had more left than I thought I did. I kicked it in and passed a bunch of people in the final straightaway, with my fastest xc 5k (believe it or not) ever. I'm really pleased with how I ran this and I think I was really resilient and kept a positive attitude throughout. The race went by pretty fast and I actually ran decently well despite adverse conditions. I'm looking forward to next week and hopefully faster times and more fun races to come! really enjoyed the day and cheering on all my teammates after the race and also getting to race with all of the frosh, who are wonderful. also had some nice spectators, including the entire gunther-brady fam.
