Whistle, whistle, whistle, whistle, BANG!

Exercise Type: Run

DCXC! My first meet of the season! Even though this is my least favorite course of the season, I still had such a great day. I did about 10 minutes of warmup jog with the team during which my shoes and socks got fully soaked because it was super muddy, and then Lucia and I went with Nomi to help the froshmore (!) girls race warm up. Had a lot of fun feeling in charge and helping them prepare and they all did SO WELL!!! I may have used up a little too much energy running around during their race to cheer (I think I saw them 6 times), but I couldn't help myself because they were so inspiring and I felt so proud of them in a very parental way. :) I love my frosh and sophs!! After their race I only had a few minutes before my warmup, and I was feeling a bit tired already from all my excitement about their race. Warmup felt frantic and like I didn't have time for everything, but we got to the line in time and it was fine. Gun went off and Mia and I stuck together for the first mile which was great. At the mile mark, I pulled ahead a bit though and immediately kinda regretted it. I wanted to push myself, but having her by my side was so motivating and nice. I think I should have waited at least until the 1.5 mark to go ahead. Second mile felt hard and just like I didn't have much motivation. Tried to focus on my stride though and I think I maintained pretty good form. Third mile was super frustrating. I felt like my legs could have moved faster, but I just couldn't make myself hurt more. I tried my tactic from 3rd battle last year where I focused on picking off a certain number of runners in that last bit, but over and over I would get up enough motivation and pass two girls, and then lose it and get passed back. I tried getting angry by thinking Kavanaugh Kavanaugh Kavanaugh every step, but somehow my mental anger still didn't translate into my legs. Maybe I just didn't want to do better enough. Had a pretty pathetic kick, and then felt awful once I'd finished for like 20 minutes. I know these were not great conditions, and not an inspiring course, and my first race of the year, so I'm not that mad about my time, but I just feel like the season is running out (no pun intended) so fast, so I feel more pressure to do well sooner. Spent the rest of the day cheering--I think I saw all of the races except 3. Saw so many inspiring races (Lyra, Noah Braun, Joyce, and so many more) and often I didn't even know how they were doing, but they looked really strong. Then listened to one of Anthony's wonderful meet talks and had a fun bus ride back with much singing! I'm feeling so excited to see this team work the rest of the season and so inspired by all the work they've done already!!!

Title is because at the line, the guy with the gun asked if we'd heard his directions and we hadn't so he told us to start after whistle, whistle, whistle, whistle, bang which was super clarifying. :)
