Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Went on a meandering run through the hills at night, though trying to keep things as flat as possible. I'm finally starting to recognize some of the landmarks even though I've only seen them at night for the most part. Most of the streets in the hillside neighborhoods are so thin that if two cars meet going opposite directions, one of them has to back up into the intersection. There are also a lot of dead ends, some of which allow pedestrians to pass via staircases and narrow alleyways. Not all of these pedestrian shortcuts appear on google maps, so sometimes I'm best off ignoring the map and blindly exploring to see what I find. Other times, that can get me stuck in a neighborhood with no outlet after going up a Salesianum Maintenance Hill type of slope 2 or 3 times. Tonight though, I managed to find the one relatively wide street (other than the two state highways) that winds through these little neighborhoods, starting at the old Sephardic Jewish cememtary from the 1500s-1940s (largely destroyed in the Nazis by the Serb snipers on the 1990s Siege of Sarajevo, but still a landmark everyone seems to know) and ending at the large Muslim cemetery and mosque above the Bistrik ravine. Also managed to find the elementary school that my host niece attends and which various members of my host family voted at in the elections two days ago. The three-member Presidency--one of each ethnic group--was won by a Croat from a liberal multi-ethnic party, a Muslim from the main pro-status-quo Republican-eque corrupt party, and a far-right Serb nationalist. I've enjoyed surveying all the campaign posters on my runs --- there's like 5 on every block, though you never see lawn signs here - only on public buildings and street lamps. I doubt I'll find the ads that replace them nearly so interesting.
