October 16, 2018 (Afternoon)
Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Took almost the same route as yesterday except decided to explore a different part of Vratnik and try to find this lovely little plateau I can see from my apartment which sometimes looks like it was colored light strung between the trees (I later learned this is, in fact, the Yellow Bastion, a mostly-destroyed piece of the fortifications with a lovely view of the city). I didn’t find it, but I did get to experience a new part of Vratnik, which I think is the most lovely neighborhood in the city. Its a dense tangle of narrow alleys, steep staircases, and broad streets that reminds me a bit of the Old City in Jerusalem. It was once an Ottoman fortress, which expanded to encompass nearly 1000 houses for families seeking protection from Austrian invaders. The views are magnificent. Kept up probably a 7-7:30 effort for most of the run. I was feeling weary from the weekend’s mountain run however and I could probably use a day off soon.
