Every Vogt Counts! (And a Little G bonus)

October 28, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
As I write this I’m driving with my parents up to Pennsylvania to volunteer as canvassers, knocking on doors reminding registered Democrats to vote. Hence the double entente of this title. Prior to that in I managed to squeeze a run in.

Two runs, in fact. Listen...

Woke up at the crack of dawn (7:35am) to drive to Palesades and meet up with the incredible Emily Vogt ‘14, Lucy’s eldest sister, for the first of two runs this morning. Oh my goodness that woman is fast! I haven’t run with Emily since Makemie her senior year 5 years ago and while she told me yesterday at ISLs she’d been running, I really didn’t know what to expect. We ran for 70 minutes at what I would guess was close to an 8 minute pace, out along the old trolley path to the Delacartia water treatment plant to the CCT, then cut over onto the Little Falls path, then back onto CCT at River, circles around through Kenwood which is beautiful even without the cherry blossoms, out onto River by Wowcow and into the Westbard neighborhood to the CCT at Mass, back along it and up some little dirt trail to Sangamore and finally back on Macarthur. Never slowed down even on the hills, even though we were a both bit out of breath from talking nonstop. Heard all about her research at NIH, my adventures on Bosnia, and the challenges of adulting. She hasn’t run a race in years but I bet she could go out and run a sub-20 5k tomorrow without even realizing how fast she was going.

After that adventure jumped in my car and drove back to my parents neighborhood to meet up with Ana for a light leaf-catching shakeout. No leaves alas but good conversation and beautiful woods as always; I love Rock Creek Park. I managed to show Ana some trails she hadn’t tried that were within 5 minutes of her house.

On the whole, I feel a lot better than yesterday. Sprinting up those hills to cheer on the 5 MAC and ISL races really tired me out and I felt totally wiped last night so I was worried I wouldn’t be feeling so spritely this morning. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised.
