Today's workout reminded me of my favorite XC pump-up song that I discovered last year, "Quick": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RhfzQe9Y00
We were indeed very quick on both the 400m and 200m repeats, hitting 71 and 74 on the quarters and 30, 32, 34, 34 (I think - something like that) on the 2s. Had an awesome co-ed group initially named "The Runners formerly known as Panini Grill" (you'll have to ask Nathaniel where that name come from). We reshuffled the groups after the first 400m to better match the times we'd run, and it was really rewarding to watching Jeff, Ilana, and Nathaniel go from being very intimidated thinking they'd been dragged into a group too fast for them, to running smoothly, swiftly, and with confidence as the laps progressed. Jeff actually ran it smarter than anyone of us... I initially told everyone to run it smoothly and without strain but then on the second 200 got a little too carried away urging everyone to go fast. Jeff started out last but soon was right there in the mix as the rest of us slowed down to a more sane pace, and he held steady to the pace he'd started at. Annie and Ken and some of the newer runners also had a terrific effort. I was most impressed however with Ella who as a track sprinter appeared to be in her natural habitat - I swear I she was still smiling during those 200s (does she ever stop smiling?) and managed to recover her breath faster than any of us on the cooldowns. Those were the fastest 200s I've done in at least half a year. Felt good though. Run back to school and stretching with Jeff, Matt Siff, and others was fun as well.
Someone, maybe it was Siff, had the brilliant observation that if our strides were supposed to be both smooth and continuous, then that made them differentiable. I'll keep that Calc joke in mind next time I run a race.
