Icy morning jog

December 9, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
My morning interview was postponed till early afternoon and so, with an extra 2 hours on my hands, I decided to change into my running clothes and see if I could squeeze a few miles during actual daylight hours for the first time since returning to Bosnia 10 days ago. As I left my apartment, I was greeted by my host aunt (the aunt of the guy renting the apartment to me) and her 8-year-old daughter Aila wearing beautiful shawls, which I learned was because they'd just returned from Sunday school at their mosque. Aila of course wanted to run with me but her mother told her know. This was the right call for all the usual reasons, but one new one: ice. It has rained a lot the last 24 hours and as soon as I started running the pavement felt slick with slippery layer of icy frost. On I decided against going uphill and set off down Put Mladih Muslimana toward the Goat Bridge. However, I soon encountered a man walking along the road past where I normally turn off for the goat bridge trail, and this gave me an idea to continue down the road and see if there was still enough shoulder in the tunnel for it to be runnable. Turns out the tunnel has a sidewalk! I came out on the other side, crossed a deep gorge over the Miljacka and before long arrived at the entrance to Obhodza, the little mountainside community across the river. I explored some streets I'd never been on before, then eventually made my way down to Ambassador's Alley and back home again. The run was embarrassingly slow, even the downhill parts, but I'm just glad I got myself out the door in the first place given how inconsistent I've been as of late.
