2 Julias and a Vogt!

December 27, 2018 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I set up another Julia and Julia run today like we did back in August, but at the last minute decided to invite a surprise mystery runner... the illustrious Emily Vogt ('14). Julia Smith had said she wanted to do a long run of about 12 miles and Julia Gunther said she was recovering from a sprained ankle and would come "at least part of the way" so I decided to avoid the trails, and recreate a run I'd done in high school--cruising down Connecticut Avenue to the White House. Starting from my parents' house near Chevy Chase Circle its about 6 miles, and after Van Ness, it's downhill the whole way. I high school, however, I must have gotten picked up or taken the metro back, cause I never did a run as long as this until college. Nor had anyone else in the group, it turned out. We meandered a bit through downtown along 18th or 19th street after getting spun off at Dupont Circle, stopped at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave for a group photo, and then began the long leisurely climb up 16th Street. At least, it was leisurely for me. It was a lot less leisurely for Emily Vogt, who, at Julia Smith's request, spent the mile-long hill up to Piney Branch describing her research on treating alcoholism and other addictions at NIH. Despite everyone breathing hard, we didn't take any breaks to the top and never deliberately slowed down. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, the air in the 40s... a gorgeous day for a winter run. We cut through Rock Creek Park on Joyce Road and then took the bike trail along Military up the other side while as I've learned time and again is far hillier than the road itself. You'll have to ask my running companions how they felt about that... Lucy Vogt has come to pick up Emily at Military and Oregon by St. Johns (set up through a couple phone calls mid-run) and then the Julias and I headed back to the Gunther house after which Julia G drove us both home. All in all, a solid day. When I got home, I lay down on the couch with my jacket still on and promptly fell asleep.
