Lost in Herzegovina

December 13, 2018 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
This was a crazy run... I got thoroughly lost in a city I'd never been to before. This morning my translator and I took a train to Mostar, a city in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia. After a long day of interviews and bit of sight-seeing, we settled down in our freezing cold hostel. It would be the first night I can remember sleeping in my winter jacket. But first, the run. I headed out around 10:30 or 11pm and within a minutes my phone had totally run out of battery. I had some sense of the city because the Neretva River flows down the middle of it and there are a handful of easily identifiable buildings, bridges, and one big cross on a hillside. But the fog obscured all of these unless you were pretty close. I sauntered down one appealing-looking street, then another. I can't even describe how overjoyed I was to finally be running in a place that was flat. But then I thought it would be a swell idea to turn the run into a loop and pretty soon found myself thoroughly lost. It was over an hour before I caught sight of view across the river that revealed where the old town was and hence to get back. Still, I was a supremely satisfying run. I think I saw just about every section of Mostar and perhaps some outlying communities as well.
