I wasn't feeling ready to race after feeling pretty crummy for the second half of the week, but as Tom said, you can fake an 800. Turns out, I'm really bad at faking an 800. This was one of the worst races I've ever run, maybe even the worst. It didn't help that the meet was so behind, or that I was feeling sick, but the race just played out terribly.
I was randomly seeded 13 out of 13, and so I knew that I would have to really be aggressive at the beginning to get in a good position. The race went out really hard for maybe 50 meters, so I couldn't make a super aggressive move like I wanted to, but then slowed up. So I got stuck and ran a 34 high on the first lap which I knew was way too slow for what I needed to get the conference mark. I tried to make passes, but since I was trying to move faster than a long line of 12 people, there was nowhere to tuck in and I had to mostly run in lane 2. I worked my way up quite a bit, and ran a 33 for both middle laps, but closed in 34 and couldn't get the job done. It came out to 2:17... I haven't run an 800 that slow in a really really long time. I'm really disappointed that I didn't get the conference qualifier but at the end of the day, I've got a lot more races left in college and I can't let one bad performance define the rest of my year. Time to focus on the next one.
