April 20, 2019 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
We had Ella, Ruby, Danielle Soto, Jacob Greene, and Sahari in William’s group. Looked like they were working really hard and William drove them without mercy. In my group we had Oliver, Joyce, and Caleb R. We jogged down to Macarthur first and came back the high trail (which I pointed out was the original alumni challenge course). I had Caleb do 5 half hills to the picnic bench on his own. The other two did the full workout I had planned and really rose to the occasion. Joyce in particular was super winded at the top of each but never complained. After the one full hill and two 3/4 hills to the dirt cross-trail, I was inspired by William’s workout and altered the last part. Rather than having them run the the bottom half of the hill 4 times we instead jogged halfway up the hill and then sprinted the top half. William’s dirty little secret is that no matter how easily you jog that bottom section you will still be out of breath by the time you start the sprint. Both Oliver and Joyce ran these 4 pickups confidently and powerfully, steadily improving their times from an initial 30 and 40 seconds respectively to 25 and 34 on the last one. Really excited to hear what they do in the second half of the season.
as for me, there was nothing I did this morning that was good for my body. My quads felt totally fine when I woke up for the first time since before the marathon but even that jog reactivated their soreness. I didn’t do any full hills but I pace Joyce and Oliver for half of the full hill and 3/4 hills and then for the entirety of the last four jog-sprints. The hamstring flexor injury that screwed up the end of my season is back in full force but at least the tendinitis in my left calf wasn’t bothering me (until hours later). Worth it for da kiddos!
