Longest Run Ever!

May 17, 2019 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Decided I wanted to do a long run to finish off my season and my high school running career. People often get to do these at the end of seasons, but I've never been healthy enough to do one before, so I was excited! Wanted to do my longest run ever which meant longer than the 7.3 mile run that Sophia and I did freshman year when somehow neither of us were injured. I asked the lovely Lauren Silberman to accompany me, and she kindly agreed.

She showed up at my house very close to when we'd planned (!!) and we set off. Our plan was to basically just do an out and back to her house, so she could hop on a bike if she was too tired to keep running. I was feeling pretty tired very early on which made me nervous about having another 7 miles left, but we pushed through together, and I eventually loosened up and started to feel a bit better. We ran the whole way there on Connecticut which wasn't the nicest route, but was the most direct. Kept being faster than a good long run pace, so had to consciously slow down a couple of times. Finally made it to the Silberman residence where we took a very long break to drink water and admire her Bat Mitzvah photos! Then motivated to continue, she decided she felt good enough to run the whole thing with me (!), and we ran back a much prettier way. Felt waaaaayyyy better on the way back and briefly considered going to 10 miles rather than 8 because I think I could have, but it was probably smart not to. We took turns motivating each other when the other was flagging, and I feel so lucky that I had her there with me. Definitely wouldn't have done it alone! Writing this the next day, I feel a bit sore, but no more so than after a hard AU workout. It's pretty awesome that I can do this kind of run without it being a HUGE deal anymore. I mean not to sell myself short, I'm very proud that we did this and that it's my longest run in time and distance, and I've only ever done 3 runs over 7 miles, but it's just cool that this kind of effort didn't totally wipe me out. This is a weird, sad time where my time officially with the team is pretty much over, but this run made me really excited for what my future running life holds and helped me realize that my love for this sport doesn't rely on the team. The team has taught me a lot and will always be a huge part of me, but I also feel ready to go out in the world as my own runner and find joy and excitement in that. Pretty cool! And we might have made some tentative racing plans for the future on this run which are exciting. :) Also, I purposely stopped my watch at 1:23:45 because I thought it was pretty cool, and we got Robeks at the end, so it was a completely wonderful day all around. I'm so proud of us!!!
