Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 70 and light rain/drizzle
Comments:
Well, I may be about a month behind in logging, but I've been running some and I am satisfied with the race. I had been pretty unmotivated to race, but as I'd skipped the race last year (and regretted it somewhat), I figured I should make myself do it this year. I went down at about 5:22 and had time just to sign in, do a few butt kicks and high knees and leg swings before we started. My hope had been to work only as hard as needed to win, but in the light rain, it was a very small field and I quickly spotted a couple of young studs. I went out in third with two young guys getting out much quicker. They split by the time we reached the rotary. The leader pulled away fairly steadily after that and won in 18:10. (Turns out he is a rising senior at Gilman and in their top 7.) The second place fellow got about 30 meters ahead of me along Hulbert, but I gained some ground when he swung wide onto Bathing Beach Rd and was only about 20 meters back at the mile mark. I gained on him a bit along the flat and then, without trying, I gained a fair bit on the hill up Cliff Road. Without much effort, I passed him before the turn onto Lincoln Ave. I pushed the middle stretch and was aware he wasn't likely going to be a factor after the Cliff rotary. I may have relaxed a smidge at times along Cliff as I was feeling tired, but I was able to push the downhill pretty well and was pleased with my from and focus along the final stretch. Having the young guy (who apparently is a rising senior at Nantucket High School with a 5km PR of 18:11... and who was running with headphones and ran a 30 second course PR) there was very helpful. It got me to go out faster than I'd intended. It got me to focus on catching him and it forced me to work the middle mile to open up a gap. I was pleased with my focus and pleasantly surprised with me fitness. It felt good to beat a young guy and to be under 19. I think this may have been the fastest 5km I've run in the past 3-4 years, but I haven't actually researched that thoroughly. Chatted with the organizer and the leaders for a few minutes and jogged home via Hulbert and a dip in the cold rain at Boat Beach.
