Normanstone-Whitehaven Rollercoaster

July 16, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Aaaaaaand, I'm back. Like Ilana, I've been running without logging the last few weeks, though for a rather different reason. While on vacation in South America, I was trying to see avoid not just social media but pretty much any form of contact with the outside world so I could stay fully focused on the here and now and not having my mind be distrated from the amazing sights I was seeing. I'm catching up now, so after tonight you should be able to take a look at my running adventures from the Atacama desert and Altiplano (there are only a few of them).

Today's run at STA involved Anthony leading Ethan Litmans, Corbin, Arthur, and me on one of my favorite woody adventures routes, a classic summer loop I only ever do as part of STA summer running because it's too far from home or GDS for us to be likely to end up on. Down Normanstone, cut right onto a trail that lets out by the Khalil Gibran Statue at the old man protesting sex abuse in the Catholic Church on Mass Ave, sneak around of the Vice President's house squeezing down a little trail between New Zealand's really spiffy embassy the the Naval Observatory, across Wisconsin Ave on Whitehaven trail through the park with the over-excited dogs that are always off their leashes, and up and down a "roller coaster" (a term from Anthony's high school days) until the trail dumps you out at Glover between the 3rd and 4th intersections. This time, however, I cut off while Arthur DV after the dog park for reasons his log today make abundantly clear. Arthur, the official spelling of my name is Matt "Mattsimonson" Simonson, no space needed. I started signing my emails that way in college in reference to that fact that people for some reason have the tendency to refer to me by both my first and last name, said as if they were a single word. Actually, most teammates in college called me Chief, KSB (King Slow Boy), Simonson, and Adonis the Physique for reasons that you can me about on a long long run, but that's neither here nor there.

Let it be said the Ethan and Corbin are in incredible shape, leaving me and Anthony chocking in the dust. Arthur, too, did a good job of faking it, until he didn't. Don't worry...you too will put both your coaches to shame by the end of the summer, once you adjust to the 90% humidity and 90-degree heat. Having just come for the Atacama desert where it both a) winter and b) literally the driest place on earth, I have not yet adapted to DC summer, so I was happy to cut my run off early with him prior to Glover and endure one less hill than the rest of them did. Here's our route!
