Hawai’i 5-0 clock

August 7, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Okay, so this run was at 6 o’clock, not 5, but it felt like 5 and I wasn’t gonna get up an extra hour early just to make that pun work. 6 was brutal enough as it was, especially since I’d gone to bed at midnight after finishing another run half a night before. But when Ryan Ford offers to go for a run I always say yes if I can. We were the last of Lissy’s wedding guests still in town—or the last among my Williams XC teammates anyhow—and I had yet to run with anyone this entire trip. Naturally the pace was faster than it would have been on my own. The great conversation didn’t so much ease the soreness and discomfort so much as give me something else to focus on. We ran up the canal that separates Waikiki from the rest of Honolulu, then out around Moon Island where we stopped to admire a double rainbow that looked impossibly solid. No cats this time. We returned along the Waikiki boardwalk, taking a shortcut through a hotel, and finally bid farewell at the bridge over the canal where we’d met up. I dragged home at a half decent clip, adding on an extra loop around the neighborhood of my Airbnb because I’d gotten the idiotic idea in my head that all my runs should be an hour. The right hamstring tendon was acting up again for the first time in 3 weeks. That’s what I get for two runs close together without enough sleep in between. Did some PT exercises after.

Ryan and I concluded that Caroline Cretti is probably still as fast or faster than us, despite her insistence that she’s running really slowly these days and is thus too embarrassed to race. Prior to this wedding,I last saw her senior year when we all drove across the state at some insane hour of morning to watch her compete in the Olympic marathon trials. She got 21st.
