A Gunther lurking in every back alley

August 15, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
My plan...no, vision... for today has been what I described to Julia as "A challenging run of indeterminate length." As it turns out, every run for me (and, apparently, Julia) has been challenging this week and the length indeterminate to the extent that it might 0 on any given day. Julia has been struggling with a hip injury all week while I've been struggling with...well, being an idiot. I followed up Monday's exhausing tempo run with three nights in a row of not enough sleep, either cause I was hosting my friends from out-of-town, or because I was catching up on the research I had neglected to do while they were here. Thus it was that after 3 hours in bed, only half of which I was unconscious for, I found myself out on my doorstep at the bold hour of 8:30 am watching as two enthusiastic collegiate runners made their way up the street, all young and energetic and spritely. Since the original 13.2-mile hilly tempo I'd planned for us didn't seem like the wisest idea, we headed out on a classic Anthony-inspired run search for alleys and seeing how long we could stay in them. Several of them proved to dead ends, but we explored a few I'd never been down before. Julia got attacked by a plastic cup at one point, but otherwise, we managed to avoid the various hazards that lurk those dodgy back roads of upper Northwest.

I actually felt great today in spite of 90 minutes of sleep. Or maybe I was just too busy talking to notice if I was sore. We discussed injuries for a good bit and concluded that Ana is better than either of us at diagnosing herself (that is, determining whether she is actually injured), despite having fewer seasons under her belt. Then again, maybe Julia and I have that ability too, but we're just too stubborn to listen to aches and pains. In any case, here's to a healthy season for all of us.
