2 miles uphill with Alex Kaz

August 10, 2019 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70ish and pleasantly warm

Comments:
Second day of the three day camping trip to Pi Pi campground in the Sierras. Elevation was 4,100 ft. Kim and Alex were with us for the second year and for the second year I headed off with Alex for a hilly run, intimidated by his marathoning, ultra marathoning, and triathloninig abilities. For the second year in a row, he held me back while simultaneously motivating me. We headed the half mile down through the campground to the entrance and turned right to see where the road would take us past the campgrounds. We found out. UP the road went up for about two miles. He wanted to turn back at 20 minutes, but I insisted the trees were thinning and that we should continue a bit farther. We turned into a small dirt side road/parking lot and looped for a minute or two and then returned downhill for two miles and back to camp. Early in the uphill it became apparent I liked to run hills at a faster pace than him, so I swerved a fair bit and eventually just went ahead and looped back periodically. Felt surprisingly good, probably because I was crushing the Russian triathlete. Wish I'd gone further, although Alex did that solo the next day and reported there was a mile of downhill after our peak. I did not join him Sunday. Instead, we left before they did and stopped for absurdly large ice cream creations at Fentons in Vacaville. https://www.fentonscreamery.com/ Some choices I make are healthier than others.
