Supporting some Mighty Hoppers

September 28, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Made a surprise appearance at DCXC after catching a flight down from Boston early this morning and then taking a 3-hour nap at home. I really needed that sleep. Felt great after I woke up and made it over to Kennilworth Gardens in time to catch the last mile of the JV girls 11th/12th grade race. Managed to catch Natasha and Talia by surprise going up the last hill, which was nice since they were the only ones who weren't surprised by my last visit (being co-conspirators in the closet entrance). Shortly thereafter I was ambushed/hugged/tackled by one Lucy Vogt followed seconds later by about 40 other runners who came streaming in from all directions. Word sure does travel fast. After catching w/ Oliver, Nathaniel, Arthur, and Caleb S-S over by the end tent on the outlook for the boys' team, I headed back out to cheer on the rest of the races. DCXC isn't nearly as spread out as Oatlands so I actually didn't get in nearly as much running as last time, despite the fact that there was a least one race for gender and grade. Still, the girls 12th-grade varsity totally tired me out as I rushed to get from point to point on the course, cutting corners to catch them as many time as possible, and by the time the gun went off for the boys 12-grade varsity I was feeling beat. Rallied, of course, to cheer them on and then after joining in the team photos passing around the cookies I'd requisitioned from the Lone Gull 10k last Saturday, walked slowly back to my car and drove off to meet some friends for dinner and board games in Virginia. Not exactly the ideal pre-race light run (or bedtime) but still a fantastic experience. Saw several PRs and a lot of terrific late-race passing and forming packs. We'll see how much energy I have for tomorrow's early morning battle...

(this mileage is a wild guess)
