I decided that doing a 5k race this morning wasn't enough...partly because I saw leaves falling on a walk I took later and wanted to catch them. Plus, it would be good for legs, I told myself. And I wanted to try to hit 70 miles for the week.

The first few miles were slow and extremely sore. I probably started out at close to an 11-minute pace with my calves aching even more than they had this morning. But they got better as the run progressed and in the last few miles I decided to pull myself out of the funk I was in and run swift and proud. Probably got down to around a 7-minute pace or better. Didn't catch any leaves! It's amazing how out in the northern suburbs it's practically raining leaves and in Boston, they really haven't even yellowed. I guess cities create a heat bubble that delays the onset of the sort of fall temps that trigger leaves dropping (may have to do with the light cities put off in the evenings as well). I'm looking forward to a good leaf haul this week though and maybe and my next race out in the suburbs next weekend.
