Matt Simonson suggested we cheer on Emily Vogt and Julia Smith in their inaugural marathons. He picked me up at 7:10 and I drove us to Georgetown in his pistachio Fiat. Parked at the top of Hessian Hill and after a few minutes of wishing I were warm in bed in stead of about to step out into rain, we exited the car and jogged to Roslyn where we watched chairs and early starters. Realizing we'd likely missed all our targets in the thick streams of runners a mile in, he and I jogged up The GW Parkway the length of that ramp and stood where we thought we'd get a better vantage point. First I saw Polly Terzian and ran with her up to the bridge. She seemed quite comfortable and sure enough, she finished as 68th woman and in an impressive time. Jogged back down the ramp to see Jon Ettinger and Matt coming up chatting. Ran with them through Georgetown. Soon after we encountered Julia Smith and ran with her for a mile and half up Rock Creek. Paused for a bit and then, not finding Emily, jumped back in with Julia for another mile or so. Saw Kristina Lenox, and Santa, and thousands of others. eventually connected with Emily who's started late and ran a few miles with her. Peeled off at the top of Haines Point and watched the leaders ascending the 14th St bridge. Realizing I'd missed Jon and Julia behind the treasury, I jogged p towards the Wash monument. Soon spotted Jon and ran with him to the National Gallery despite his many calf cramps. Parted with him and found Julia Smith a hundred meters back. Ran with her past Jon as he paused to get hot sauce from his wife and parted from Julia in front of the Arts and industries building, where I waited for Jon and accompanied him to 14th street. Crossed and waited in pouring rain for Emily. Joined her and Lucy! and Matt until 7th street when I turned left and ran to the MCI center metro stop. Was nice and tired by the end and the right knee which was achy after Saturday was still achy. Metro to Friendship Heights, but still had the motivation to run up the escalators and the rest of the way home. Was plenty trashed for the rest of the day, although I rallied a bit after a 15 minute shower and some food. So impressed by all those runners, including the three hoppers who ranged form 3:50-3:58. Messed up watch a fair bit and pace, mileage is just a guess. I was running and standing, and cheering from 7:40am until I got onto the Metro around 11:00. Matt, who stayed with Emily to the end, said he covered about 23 miles, but I wasn't anywhere close to that.
