A New Dawn

December 15, 2019 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Ok so this was a really strange day. I wasn't super optimistic coming in, but I was racing, so weird things happen. Showed up early, was kinda cold at the start. I was in the way back to start, think like 250-300 range. It took 15 or so seconds to reach the start line, and then I was off.

Realized immediately that I was way too far back, and steadily worked my way up, though the first half mile was the slowest of the race. For the first five miles I went steady-- in fact I had the fabled 5/40 split! Nonetheless, I passed somewhere on the order of a hundred and fifty people during this time.

After five, I came up on this guy who smelled like he was wearing an unwashed running shirt, which I took as a cue to accelerate, this time to about 7:35-7:40. Until about the halfway point, I counted the people in front of me, I think maybe 125 or so people at that point.

After the turn I picked it up again, this time to the 7:20 range, where I stayed for the rest of the race. I felt a little weird in the quad, but my shins were shockingly fine. The rest of the race was basically me passing people-- I don't think I was passed by anyone after mile 2, and its certainly possible I passed them later.

Anyways, it was better than expected. And I know that if I can get my shins and calves healthy, the only possible direction is up. I felt good and pleased to be out there. As for the results, I finished 70th. I was second in the age group. Talked with some of the many people I passed after, did a quick cool down, and headed home. I will do one of these again.
