A two minute PR is always fun.

Leah agreed that it would be intriguing to run a 5km time trial on the Crescent trail, so we drove to park at the cul de sac on the north side of the trail between Mass and Sangamore and MacArthur. Jogged the half mile up to the mile marker east of Mass. Did some drills and leg swings and 4 striders. The patient was apprehensive, but as open minded as anyone would be in these circumstances. Existing PR was 29:30 from last fall's 3rd Battle, and we hoped to be in that range. Set off fairly aggressively, but she seemed to be setting the pace, so I went along for the ride. We settled into something more reasonable, but still ambitious. Leveled nicely as the half mile splits will show. Managed the overpass at River well and stayed nicely motivated on what was feeling like a long stretch up to the car dealership. Turned a 180 at the 1.5 miles and accelerated fairly noticeably a that point. Kept incredibly consistent and built a nice head of steam coming down the River Road bridge. Had to just kick on faith, not knowing when her watch would give us the 3.1 mile buzz. It came on the Mass overpass and we slowed to a joyful walk. (27:33 on our watches for a solid 2 minute PR!) A few minutes later we returned to a jog. Took that to the car and beyond to stretch it to a half mile. While Loper went to stretch, I looped that hood a bit looking for a port-a-john (with success) and a bit more mileage. Returned after 12 minutes of jogging. It was a pleasure to be a pacer to such a strong and focused effort. Nice to see the consistent spring training, determined focus, and 18 months of experience pay off. Half mile splits: 4:19, 4:39(8:59), 4:37(13:36), 4:26(18:03), 4:20(22:23), 4:10(26:34), 59 for 0.1 miles... Mile splits were therefor 8:59 uphill, 9:04 turning from up to down halfway, and 8:31 followed by the final 0.1 mi kick.
