Sloggin

May 16, 2020 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70 and climbing with some humidity

Comments:
Warned my family this would be a day filled with running stuff. Headed over to the HS to see the start of a serious running undertaking by Satola and Litmans and then drove on to Fairlington where I parked on 30th Rd. Jogged 2+ miles to SSSAS where I stretched and awaited the coming of a smurf. Felt totally on empty and pretty dead legged on the jog over and the 20 minute stretch and leg swings did nothing to freshen me up. (I'd had half a granola bar and half a smoothie on the drive, but I think I was somewhat dehydrated from Friday's longer, very humid morning run and not replenishing enough. Abby and I set off and found the "secret" passage not even I knew about to get from the VA Seminary through to EHS. (Walking the ten extra yards to the end of the fence worked even better than squeezing on the ground through the gap in the chained gate I'd used on the way over.) We paused to look into the Flippin Field House and over the wall into the now turfed Hummel Bowl. We did leg swings at my car and marveled in awe at the absurdly steep hill up from 4 Mile run on Walter Reed Dr. Generally speaking, we made our way north for what felt like a very long, hot 4.5 miles or so. I doubled back at 5th Street South and trudge back to my car. I'd run 1:06 since SSSAS and had run 18 to get there earlier. I missed the turn onto 30th on the return to my car and ended up with an extra block of running. Seeing as I was wasted and distraught at that point, it was salt in my wounds. I chugged my water, half granola bar, and half smoothie as I drove home, catching a glimpse of the Potato as she approached Key Bridge. Collected Leah B. at home and mixed myself a Gatorade which seems to have helped me a lot. Drove swerving through NW looking for Abby and made it to Ellington in time to see Wolfe Wolin run a few seconds off his 3200 PR. He wasn't content with the performance, but like most folks time trialling at this time of year, he seems to recognize his accomplishments don't lie in the time he runs. Leah was next, running an 800 with me alongside. Happily my body had recovered enough for me to be of use, and tied her outdoor PR. Got to cheer for Daniel O-M who crushed a PR in the 800 and even found myself jumping in next to Arthur H for half a lap of his 800. Was pleased to see Abby come by the track as she made her way up to Mt. St. Alban with Ana-Sophia and Dora flanking her on bike and foot. Eventually got home, ate too much lunch, and crashed for a nap before the thrilling 4th event of the track pentathlon. Feet at achy, and I've been low on energy all day, but still feel much better than during that morning run. Endless admiration for those who found the motivation and strength to go out and perform today (and tonight).
