Anthony + Racial Justice + Mulberries!

June 3, 2020 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Showed Anthony some trails in upper Rock Creek that he amazing didn’t know about while having a very involved discussion about racial justice, protests activism in my high school years versus today, and the racial dimensions of cross country. Then added on 3 more miles of exploring on my own. I hadn’t planned to run more after I finished but I was feeling “so full of running” (to quote Sir Roger Bannister) that I figured I should cherish that. It was a good deal harder without Anthony next to me, and I wanted to stop several times but I’m glad I didn’t except to photograph some interesting protest signs on telephone poles...

On a very different note, I also paused to eat some mulberries growing in on trees in the alley behind Lafayette Elementary playground. They’re so delicious! I always look forward to this time in June in DC but I had forgotten just how yummy they are plus the joy of plucking fruit off trees. Despite the forecast the weather was quite enjoyable in the shade. Anthony and I even saw a hawk up close! Later I found a nifty alley shortcut within blocks of home that I didn’t know about. Next time I’ll see if Anthony has discovered it.
