Exercise Type: Run
Weather: 80ish and dropping humidity
Comments:
It was still plenty warm and humid, but much nicer than it has been for a while, and that certainly helped me feel good. Other than an hour of tennis with David right before lunch (He beat me 6-4!) I hadn't done much exercise since the long bike ride Friday afternoon and I was feeling fresh for once.
Headed out alone at 9:30pm with a stomach still feeling fairly full from Korean take out and Lew's zucchini cake. Luckily, that never became much of a factor.
Decided to run the 5km loop up Wisc, over Bradley, and down Conn to Livingston. (I know it is longer than a 5km, and yet it's shorter than 3.5 miles. (I did add on a cooldown for about 3 minutes, so I'm calling the run 3.5.) Pace was not lethargic at the start, and I noted getting to Oliver and Wisc in about 5:08. AS I was cutting behind the Mormon church, I was hastily approached by the Chevy Chase cop who monitors it in his cruiser. Judging the middle aged white jogger as a non threat, he let me pass, and I again marveled at our world.
My regular watch died earlier in the day, so I was wearing Lew's purple one and confused a few buttons, but I think I was at Bradley at 10:40 and at Conn at 15:35. Coming up from Starbucks, I was at 58 seconds by the driveway and then accelerated to finish in 1:50 before cooling down. Was very nice to feel so good and strong after all these weeks of fatigue and self doubt. Stayed pretty much in control for the entire run and I'm not even sure I should call this a tempo, yet it was. I was in a nice, naturally building groove. I never pushed into discomfort until the last 50 seconds, but I was clearly pushing the pace. Nothing like a nighttime run in the summer where the course if familiar and short. 24:15 for the loop and I figure I started at 7:45 and ended up running most of it around 7:00 pace. The final stretch was surely around 6:30 pace, but that could just be the night talking.
