Exercise Type: Run
Weather: low 80s, but a strong sun
Comments:
Left home 15 minutes later than I'd planned, but biked hard and enjoyed some good downhills to bike from 3944 to The Smurpher's house in Arlington in exactly 24 minutes. Got off the bike a bit wobbly in the legs and within a couple of minutes we were running towards the NW Boundary Stone closest to the river. With Abby's guidance we found it quickly and I sketched a quick depiction of it on the street with help from some sprinkler runoff. A few hills later, we passed through the playing fields of Potato's elementary school and reached Old Dominion Road and the steep embankment below the next stone. Took a moment to stretch the block-like legs which were feeling every pedal stroke on the hills of Arlington. A few minutes of scaling the sheer embankment and weaving through the patches of poison ivy, and the stone came into view. It was quite a sight and quite a site (surrounded by a labyrinth of fences). A cautious decent and on we meandered past Abby's middle school and potential high school. Eventually we expanded my understanding of Arlington geography and returned to the Murphy home. Kindly, I was given water and Gatorade (both of which were essential to my survival), and I spent the next 36 minutes riding home. I opted to add a couple of miles to the route, so as to avoid climbing directly from river level to Tenley. I went by way of Crescent Trail and Dorsett (Including carrying the bike on my shoulder up from the tow path to the graffiti bridge.) All in all, except for the usual pain at the top of my right knee from biking, I felt pleased with my effort and focus up the endless slope of Crescent and the Dorsett hill. Upon reaching home, though, I felt quite wiped out. Nice to have seen a smurph, they are now quite rare, and nice to have collected two new boundary stones.
