My first run since High School

November 7, 2020 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
You can ask any of my friends in college and they will tell you: I do not run. If I am late for the bus, I am missing the bus. If it is raining and I’m not wearing a jacket, I will get soaked. Well not anymore. It’s a new day.

Since I was 14 years old I thought something was wrong with me. I thought I had back abnormalities so severe that I would live the rest of my life in pain unless I was able to find ways to mitigate it and “baby” my back and body. I thought all this because at least 10 different medical professionals have told me this. Damn them.

I have yet to be diagnosed, but doing the work alongside the diagnosis, my pain has improved drastically in 2 weeks. It's not completely gone but it's 100x better. There is this guy, Dr. Sarno, and he came up with the medical diagnosis “TMS, Tension myositis syndrome.” What it means is that people who don’t want to deal with negative emotions like sorrow, anger, and frustration store the emotions in their bodies instead of fully processing them. So instead of feeling anger, one would tense up their muscles, cutting off oxygen and causing muscular, tissue, (even tendon, and nerve issues) especially in the lower back and buttox.

It sounds crazy, but the more research I do, the more it makes sense to me and the better my own pain gets.

So I went for a run yesterday. I have been doing a lot of physical activity. Part of the recovery for TMS is to not be afraid of physical activity. People with TMS become obsessed with their pain because it is so scary. So I couldn’t be afraid of running anymore.

I am healthy. I am young. I am strong. And there is nothing wrong with me.

I ran 30 minutes total. I was out for 2 hours. I started with 15 minutes of running and then did a 10 minute interval later, and then 5 minutes much later.

I ran over the Williamsburg Bridge, NY, right by my apartment, then walked through Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was a beautiful day. I walked back over the bridge during sunset. Everywhere people were celebrating. I was also celebrating.
Sending love to the GDS running community <3
