A bit disappointed I didn't fit in a run on Monday, our tour of New England took us through Maine, and New Hampshire and just into Vermont where we stayed over with Alden and Marcie and at 7am Alden and I set off north from his town of Hartland. He told me the night before that he usually runs about 7 flat pace and I told him that was my new tempo speed. He started off very tame leaving his property, but a significant downhill in the first half mile meant we were likely down to 7 pace by the time we were 3 minutes in. A very flat next two miles or so, and then a significant hill as we turned Westward and eventually South. I believe I've mapped it to be about 5.3 miles. I was quite aware that I was working hard and anxious about holding the pace the entire way, but I was also pleasantly surprised to see how strong I felt going up the significant hill and then handling the small rolling hills after that. (Hill was close to half a mile and on a par with hills like Dana Place.) I could have worked harder if I'd needed to and I was quite shocked that there weren't more hills near the end. Felt good to have a strong effort and to hold my own with Alden, just like in the old days. Much of the rest of the day was spent in the car heading into and through NY State.
