Minnesota Open

January 16, 2010 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Felt pretty good waking up and the walk over, kept it easy on the 3 mile warmup. Legs felt good. I was a little nervous since there were a lot of people that I knew at the race. I had myself seeded at 9:05 and the goal was 9:00, which is just straight 36 laps throughout.

Got out in 34 and settled down to 36s after a lap or two. Came through the 1K in 2:58ish, felt fine. Concentrated on keeping pace and staying relaxed in the middle K. I was in no man's land the whole time. Barret and Torchia were leading and then the chase pack of the red shirt freshman were 60M ahead of me the whole time. The other 5 racers were probably another 60m behind me the whole time.

Came through the 1600 in 4:47 and 2K in 6:01, I was feeling fatigued, but still okay. Tried to keep my composure for the last 5 laps but I fell off. I tried to move with 600 to go and started kicking with 300 to go. It wasn't much of a move or a kick though. Finished in 9:07 (unofficial, results aren't online yet). That equates to a ~9:43 3200M, so in retrospect, it wasn't bad, just not good. I can't really complain since this is my first track race back, and after only two workouts for the season and I'm already almost to where I was in HS. I'm still not happy though, I wanted to go sub 9:00. Maybe I would have ran better if I would have had someone to run with, but who knows.

Back to the grind of workouts, I'll probably race again in two weeks, then again at the snowshoe open. I think the next race will be a mile/1500.
