I agreed a few weeks back to chaperone the annual 3rd grade hike in Great Falls Park to identify trees. For nearly two decades I was leading groups on this day and unable to catch any falling leaves. Today I drove out to Angler's Inn after teaching first period. I strapped on a backpack and jogged counterclockwise on the Angler's Trail intercepting various groups until I was at about the halfway mark where I encountered Eric and set myself up at the fallen logs there to teach passing groups about the leaf-snacking habits of deer. At various times I would run from place to place on the trail and I even did a loop that took me back to the Burma Road and then up through a cut-through trail. My goal was to support the 3rd grade teachers and to catch leaves. Both goals were achieved, although the 13 I caught were far short of what I could have achieved had I not had the other goal too. I forgot how rocky those trails are and I spent a great deal of time watching my footing and feeling unsure on my still achy ankle. I also had to pause frequently to interact with students and later to collect Eric's clues, untying them from the trees, and stuffing dozens of them into my backpack.
