NXR 119th leaf caught

November 19, 2023 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Cold morning, rising through the 40s at race time?

Comments:
Logging a month later may be good as I'll hopefully keep this brief. Unlike last year, I registered when I arrived and was mentally ready to race. Coached three races before my own including one that wrapped up minutes before I needed to toe the line. Had just enough time to lace up and run two 10 meter striders behind the start line. Had felt blah while coaching, but didn't let that get in my head too much. Went out with focus and had scores of people to pass from the base of the first decent to the mile mark. Worked steadily by a few more people through the rest of the race. Pushed with good focus us the first hill to the finish region and stayed alert and confident throughout. Was passed by two at the start of the final hill, but re-passed one quickly and hung onto the other all the way until he used his youth to pull away by a few steps over the final flat 40 meters. Mile splits were 6:06, 6:30, 6:07,33 for a total of 19:17. Two seconds slower than a very similar race last year. It was fun to put on spikes and race a good cross country course. Logging this a month later, I'm glad I ran, but not surprised that I'm still dealing with what is likely peroneal tendinitis in my right foot from racing in the spikes. Team generally ran very well and it was a good trip with a productive long drive home with Mark and me plotting the future. Caught my 119th leaf of the season during coaching and the season closed. Mustang -who ended up in DC all fall due to war in Gaza-- caught 140. Nathan Ireri was the top student, I believe, with about 80. Run Good.
