Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Was not excited for this at all. I noticed last week that the transitway had an 800 and a 1600 meter markings, so I used this for some old school mile repeats (PPMs!!!!!!) The idea was four miles. The shitty part, transitway runs East-West and there was a 15+ MPH from the West.
First mile, I was out a little over zealous, caught my breathing early on and realized it was too much for a tempo run, cut it back into a nice rhythm. Came through the 800 in 2:38, mile in 5:31, so my pace was good for the second half. Second mile was directly into the freezing ass wind the entire time, 5:53. It was a little too labored considering I was running about 5:40 pace before hand. The wind should have slowed me down more. Third mile started out as recovery from the last mile, came through the 800M a little slow, but finished out in 5:49.
Then the oddest thing happened, towards the end of the third mile, it was getting hard to breath and I was getting tired. I didn't think much of it but once I turned around into the wind it really hit me. I felt like complete shit and was having trouble breathing. I don't know what Asthma feels like, but I think this is what it would be. After about a minute, I stopped to walk. I walked about 10 seconds, started feeling a lot better so I tried to finish the mile. Instantly all the pain/exhaustion came back and I pulled the plug. Jogged back to the start and my head was pounding, ears were screaming and my breathing was irregular. I was not feeling good. I stopped once I got back to try and catch my breath and then attempted to drag my ass back home. I had no idea what was going on, but the breathing situation only got worse. I had no idea what the problem could have been, I didn't do anything different than usual. I then started coughing, wheezing and and spitting up tons and tons of snot. Also, I was getting swollen sores in my mouth, WTF?!?! At this point, my only conclusion was that a) something stung me and I didn't feel it (unlikely, 10 degrees and 15mph wind), some allergic reaction to the air (well, there was construction going on by where I run and this was an industrial district, pollution?) or I had some unknown disease/ailment that was going to kill me. I took two benadryl in hopes of the 2nd and low and behold, 25 minutes later my nose was clearing up, I could breath better and my headache was subsiding.
So, still no idea what I was having an allergic reaction to, but the benadryl cleared that right up. Happy with the workout though. Wish I could have finished or ran it with 15MPH winds. Man that sucked.
