Salt Point State Park

August 9, 2024 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Drove into camp in the afternoon and then set off alone to re-familiarize myself with the trails. After meandering towards the gate, I turned shaprly south onto the power line trail which rolled me up and down to the souther end of the park and spilled me onto Rt 1. Doubled back up a fire road which led about a mile and a half up hills of varying steepness to the Prairie. It was an awful climb, but I made it. Kept the pace controlled and convinced myself it would be good training for MD Heights. It was actually very, very similar in profile and length and elevation to that run we'll do next week. About 800ft of climb in 15 minutes. Grateful for the flat alongside the prairie and found my way to the "pygmy forest" which I'd hiked to years ago with Lew and Si. It was as underwhelming as I recalled and then descended on the North trail for about 14 minutes. Spilled out on Rt. 1 about a mile north of park entrance and returned, cursing the remaining hills but enjoying the incredible Pacific coast views. Feet continue to ache in unusual ways as I adjust to these new shoes. Plenty tired and the downhill was brutal on my quads and already stiff knees, but it was a satisfying loop and run. Definitely wouldn't have been completing this run earlier in the summer and glad I never walked nor looped on the ascent.
