"Running is like getting up every morning and shooting yourself. You know that you are going to put yourself through something really painful, but you also know how much strength and speed are going to come with it. The passion of the runner is to force forgetfulness on that pain and embrace the benefits that will without fail make you a better person."

I read this quote in the book I'm reading and then ran 12 miles...powerful stuff.

As usual on my distance days I warm up with a little over a mile jog and today's warmup was easily the most painful of the 12 miles. Shin splints hit and they hit hard. I was almost limping near the end. After stretching and talking myself through it I embarked for my long run of the week. In order to reach 60 miles for the week I had to run at least 8 miles and at that point 8 miles seemed unlikely. But after a few miles at a slower pace I settled in and the shin splints never came back thankfully. I ran around Milly for a good two hours at a very comfortable pace. This week I'm just working on getting the miles in. After that comes the speedwork on the track and that's when the real fun (pain) begins.
