Glen Echo Trolley Reenactment

March 14, 2010 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Rainy, cool

Comments:
You know its a really long run if you have to zoom out really far to see the whole thing. I ran down the Dorset trail to Willard Park where I noticed a sign about the Washington and Glen Echo railroad. Apparently the trolley out to Glen Echo ran through that park, down little falls, and out to Glen Echo. I didn't think too much about it, but struck out on a exploration run, discovering this crazy neighborhood call Mohican Hills with dirt roads and secret trails overlooking the Potomac. After trotting out the canal towpath as far as the Billy Goat Trail just beyond the Beltway, I came back in along the MacAruther where I picked up the old trolley route, still visible beside the bike path. Followed what I thought might have been the old trolley route all the way to Friendship Heights. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3545180

I probably shouldn't have run so far while still recovering from whatever sickness I've had the past few days. I twisted my ankle after about 6 miles and was worried I'd have to call a friend to pick me up, but after 10 seconds of gasping and cursing I started running again and it didn't impede me (it did swell a lot and get stiff afterwards though). I'm glad I kept the pace relaxed, though it is frustrating to run for so long and not have as many miles to show for it as usual. Still, I was definitely a good day strength-wise. Could feel the lactic acid and fatigue building, and knew that I was overcoming them successfully.
