So throughout the spring break and last week I had been set on one goal for the 1600, run 70 second laps consistently. Somewhere deep down I knew that running in the 4:40's 1600 was beyond what I was capable of, but none the less I just kept repeating it to myself day after day in the vain hope that it would come true. But as the week moved along, especially after the ladder workout, I felt that I wasn't were I wanted to be. But it all changed on Thursday when Coach Rusty was talking to us after practice. He talked about how you can be faster, stronger, and tougher than you ever thought you could be just by telling yourself you are. So I set myself a challenge. Don't race the people but race the clock. I had a plan. I was going to stick to 70 second laps. Leave it all on the track, so to speak.

For the 1600 we warmed up a little too early and it resulted in a lot of downtime of waiting. But as the race started I felt pretty good. My first lap was a 68. I stayed with the main pack in the second and third laps running a 73 and a 76, respectively. Through the fourth lap I fell to the back of the main pack in about 7th or 8th position until the last 200 where I started my kick. With 100 to go I passed one, with 50 to go, passed 2, then 3, then 4 runners. Finished in 4th with a 9 second PR and a 70 second 4th lap.

The 3200 I have to say was my favorite race although I wasn't looking foward to it and the fact that I just had a huge race in the 1600.
First 1600 felt pretty good, ran a 5:16. During the second half of the race I took the lead in the pack I was in and upped the pace a little bit. Held the 3rd spot until 200 to go where Jake T. from Mountain View passed me. I finished with a 10:27, although the timers gave me a 10:19 so ... whatever. But, I ran the second mile, a 5:11, faster than the first, a 5:16. And a 16 second PR too.

There is so much more I can say about the meet and the races, about how lucky I am to be a part of this team. I've got the best teammates that constantly make me push myself harder and harder, and the best coaches who put so much of themselves and their time into helping me and the team accomplish our goals.

I came into the meet with lofty goals, and although I didn't quite reach them I can leave happy. Happy because that even in failing I did better than I could have done if I didn't set such high goals. I guess thats what happens when you believe in yourself ..... and have really cool spikes.

Just kidding about the spikes. ........But not really, they're awesome.
