Fig 8s/BFEC/fields

August 30, 2008 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: warm

Comments:
Ran right at about 7:30 pace. Did the first 8 miles on fields, the next 3 miles on the BFEC river trails, the next 7 over campus and on BFEC north trails, the final 2 on fields. Felt pretty good throughout. The hills at BFEC north really destroyed me, but I felt strong while cresting them. Got a bug lodged in the back of my throat and it stayed there for the final NINE MILES, making my gag every now and then. I couldn't get the damn thing out. Felt pretty beat-up in the final two miles. Swam right afterwards and was cramping in my calf and lower body during it.

Week synopsis:
The weekly total for mileage was actually about 106 miles, as opposed to 103, because some of the runs were faster paced. I'm thinking about starting to record mileage at it's true pace instead of at the constant "7:30 pace." I like recording mileage at 7:30 pace for a few reasons. Firstly, 7:30 pace is on the slow side for training runs, so if I know ahead of time that I'll be recording a run as 7:30 pace regardless of how fast/slow I go, then it takes away some of the pressure to run fast. That's great for getting in consistent high mileage (running slow), but it's getting to the time of the season in which faster-paced daily runs really start to benefit. Secondly, recording mileage at a pre-determined pace allows for a more idiot-proof, self-regulating system. What I mean by that is that, if you feel like shit and subsequently run slow, then you'll also run less distance. If you feel great and thus run quickly, then you'll also run farther. So it allows you to run on "feel" more. But anyways, now I want my daily runs to be faster, and in order to incourage myself to do so, I think I'll start recording runs as the pace in which they were really run.

Got all of my weekly goals except that I did 10 strides only once this week, as opposed to the hoped-for two to three times. I forgot about the strides until late in the week, but it's not a big deal I don't think. Got in two good workouts, one of which (the A1s) felt better than I had expected. It was cool temperature that day, which helped tremendously.

This next week I'd like to keep the aerobic effort about the same as this week: about 105 on singles, and an additional 80-100 (minutes) swimming. A hard A1 workout and strong race. Strides two to three times.
