I started to get excited on the way home from work. The sky was getting dark and drops began to accumulate on my windshield. It's been a long time since it rained. One of our high school coaches, an Olympian from Somalia, used to always yell "monkey day!" whenever we would run in the rain for practice. Monkey days were always a joyous occasion, and we would have fun running in the rain even if our shoes were soaked. I think Coach Isak told us that on rainy days, they would hold a monkey marriage ceremony in the village in Somalia, but that could be entirely fabricated. Today, however, was no rain shower. The thunder and lightning began in the first two miles, but the torrential rain didn't start until between miles 4 and 5. I was running up Henderson Mill Rd toward the middle school and the rain was coming at an angle right into my face. It was mayhem. The sidewalks were rivers, sometimes the driest spots were an inch under water, fire trucks and ambulances sped around everywhere. I got a bunch of points: the fire truck honked, someone yelled out the window, and a girl offered to give me a ride home. My shoes were soaked, I nearly got struck by lightning, and I'm starting to doubt my sanity, but I loved every minute of it. Probably the best run of the summer.
