Midwest Collegiate Open at Parkside. The bus ride was a pain in the ass (both ways). Slept surprisingly well Friday night and napped a little bit on the bus on the way there Saturday morning. We ran the 5k course for the warmup and got lost so it would up being about 4 miles. That is a ridiculously long warmup but it didn't' seem to bother me. I felt like I couldn't get loose stretching but didn't worry about it too much. This was the first race of the season where I felt an adrenaline rush on the line. Got out fairly well up the hill and let some guys pass me on the flat once we got up there. Hit the mile in 5:29 with Dan, Kaleb, and MacColl close in front of me. Second mile (downhill) was 10:52(5:23). Once I hit the 4k I felt like the race started. I conserved a little bit to hit the hill, hitting 3 miles in 16:27 (5:35) and climbed fairly well, making up ground on MacColl and passing other guys. Once I hit the top though, I switched to survival mode and let a few guys get me in the woods. Right before I hit 4 (22:32/6:05) miles there was an open downhill when I caught MacColl and I started racing again. Got focused on the steep hills and once it flattened out I closed hard the last 600 to finish in 28:03 (5:31). Cooled down on the course with Matt Davis for 5k.

For my first 8k I wasn't upset but not thrilled. A lot of things I need to work on. Obviously, puking up 35 seconds on the 4th mile because I didn't feel like racing anymore is one of them.
