Exercise Type: Run

Weather: rainy and 60s

Comments:
I actually didn't mind this weather because it is much more comfortable and 80 and sunny. Last race on the home course and good riddance. I never ran one good race there.

So this race was a mixed bag of ok and bad. I moved up several places on the team from intersquad and the tt, but it is completely unacceptable to be 23rd. Given the recent circumstances, at least I am moving in the right direction though. My homework for the meet did not consist of an time goals b/c who the hell knows how to run a 6k. I decided that I would go out and make the 1st mile comfortable. I also wanted to stay with certain individuals that I thought might pull me to 14th on the team. I did go out comfortably in the first mile, but I didn't stay with those I wanted to b/c they went out faster. I think this was smart, and my 1st mile was a 5:35. The 2nd mile was the one that really took me out of having a pretty good race. I think the 2nd mile was a 6:20. The 2nd mile was problematic for several reasons. I heard 5:35 at the mile mark and got a bit nervous. I thought that might be too fast. I have the mindset now, which needs to change, that anything under 5:45 is too fast. I remember going through the 1st 2 miles at Calvin last year in 5:20, 5:20 and not panicking. I need to change my current thoughts that 5:20-5:40 is too fast to start when in fact, that is exactly where I should be. I took myself out of the 2nd mile and half of of the 3rd mile b/c I didn't want it to hurt and I lost focus. One positive part of my race was the last mile. For the first time ever, I ran a decent downhill mile at the farm. It wasn't blistering fast, but I passed a few people and maintained distance between those ahead of me. Once I got into the field I got a little complacent and just finished. The instant I crossed the line and stopped, I was close to fully recovered. I am sure that the weather had something to do with that, but that means I didn't run hard enough.

The time was a 22:16. I am not happy about it, but I am not dwelling on it either. By converting it to a 5k, it is faster than I ran at intersquad. So I am moving in the right direction.

I have some work/adjustments/realizations to make to progress in the next weeks. I have had some good workouts over the last 2 weeks so I need to continue putting in the effort. I need to gain confidence from these and actually race with the people I belong with. I plan to start out more aggressively in the next race and not give any thoughts to the first several mile splits. I need to practice responding to people picking up paces when I am hurting. Flick dropped me after I worked hard to get to him b/c I was content with just making the initial contact. I should have moved with him or passed him. I realize I didn't make the top 14 so I won't be running at Coopers Lake. I assume this means I run at Behrend in 2 weeks. I know that is a fast course and I enjoyed running it 3 years ago. I need to kick some ass there. I'm just going to keep doing the little things, and the times will come.
