wow! I was able to forget about the shin pain and the feeling of needing to do well, and just run my race. I got swept up by the enthusiasm of the runners around me and the effervescent crowd of excited spectators, and had a blast out there! ran the first mile at a surprisingly fast 6:58 pace, but hardly noticed that it was fast. although the second mile was slower (14:22 at the 2mile mark), demonstrating that maybe I had gone out harder than i should have, I think that first mile set me up well because it got me out of the crowd, woke my legs up, and made the adrenaline course through my veins :) the weather was perfect, everyone in the world was out there cheering, and it was just plain FUN! the only moment I would like to redo is the little bit of uphill in the "woods" as part of the last lap of that field before enjoying the downhill that eventually descends to the track. there were a few steps there where I gave in to my fatigue, and slowed for a couple of strides. I wonder if that's what cost me getting that blue girl who I passed as we stepped onto the track but who blew by me with 150 to go...
anyways, it leaves me with a fire burning for the next race, something to improve upon when i run at states. in the meantime, I'm pleased with my race and with the day as a whole. I don't think either team could have done any better! WAY TO GO HOPPERS!!!!
ps random sidenote, but everything went so much more smoothly. people warmed up and cooled down and stretched and cheered and brought the sweats back and stuff, all like clockwork! It made it so much more fun because everything was running smoothly :)
pps I pr-ed again (by 9 seconds over my St. James time). Kevin Fung, the hugs are tallying up :)
