3x1600

March 9, 2011 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 45 cloudy slight wind

Comments:
jog to AU, drills etc and a couple of laps to stay warm. Then began the workout: 3x1600 at a 6:50-7:00 target with a slow 400 recovery in between. Before the workout started, I felt a little flat/not that interested in running a workout/shaken by the car crash we caused/generally a little cold and cranky, but once the running started, I had a blast. Julia, Tess, Caroline, Kyra and I resolved to really follow the watch for the first mile and not push or do anything crazy. I ran side by side with Julia and we hit every 100 split at like exactly 26 or 25 seconds, precisely where we wanted to be. That mile ended up at 6:57 for me. The next one was the same, but a little brisker - it was tess, caroline, and kyra's last mile so they wanted to be strong, and Julia seemed happy to kick it up a notch. I felt great, so I did too. I was hardly breathing hard or working - in fact, we had little conversations every lap about the pace - and consistently shaved off about a second per lap. That mile was 6:53. Then Tess left, and Caroline and Kyra were only doing 800s for the last one. Julia and I went out side by side, and ran the entire mile stride for stride. Caroline felt good and pushed ahead in her 800, and Julia and I helped coax Kyra to give everything she had. I even "raced" her along the last 100 of her 800, without ever breaking my rhythm, just increasing my pace ever so slightly. The splits for that last mile were closer to 25s and 24s, especially on the last couple of laps. Julia and I agreed that instead of a dead sprint at the end, we'd shave one second off each 100 of the last lap. I really like that approach - I felt fast, but crossed the finish line and was hardly tired. Ran the last mile in 6:43. Then a verrryyyy slow jog (slog!) home (I didn't set the pace; I would have been fine with more....). I'm thrilled - it was a great workout!!
